Eminem biography
Marshal Bruce Mathers III (Eminem), born on October 17, 1972, in Kansas City, Missouri, was raised in a broken home that relocated several times, finally settling down on the east side of Detroit when Marshal was 12. Because of the constant moves it was difficult to make friends and the boy found himself involved in many fights. Giving up on school in the ninth grade Eminem spent his time working for several minimum-wage jobs. Being abandoned by his father drove Eminem closer to his uncles, Todd and Ronnie Nelson, with Todd becoming a father figure for him. When Ronnie Nelson died of suicide in 1991, Eminem quit rapping for a year. Recently in 2004, Todd Nelson, his father figure, also committed suicide. Left-handed Eminem experienced a very difficult family life including an overdose of drugs in 1996. His marriage to Kimberly Scott did result in the birth of his lovely daughter Hailie Jade and it is to his daughter that Eminem dedicates most of his success. An on and off again relationship, Eminem and Kimberly filed for divorced in March of 2001. Kimberly Scott has been arrested several times for drug possession and for driving without a license. Eminem's interest with rapping began while he was a student of Lincoln Junior High School and Osbourne High School. Earning the reputation of the "only white rapper" he joined groups such as Basement Productions and Sole Intent which took him to a "talent night" in Detroit which finally led him to his record Infinite (1996), a solo independent album. Receiving minor comments and criticism Eminem continued to work on his career, appearing in radio stations as well as a few shows. In 1997 he was awarded the Wake Up Show Freestyle Performance of the Year award and was mentioned in the Source's "Unsigned Hype" column. His participation in the Coalition's 1997 "Rap Olympics" in LA placed him second in the ranks.
Former member of NWA, Dr. Dre, agreed to work with him after hearing Eminem's skills on the radio. Collaborating and then releasing The Slim Shady EP in 1998 raised Eminem to star status in the rap scene enabling him to appear on MC Shabaam Sahdeeq's "Five Star General." Among the songs in The Slim Shady LP, released in 1999, are "My Name Is..." and "Guilty Conscience." The album ranked in the top three on the Billboard album charts and went platinum at least three times. Next came the success of having two million copies sold in the first week after the release of Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP (2000). The LP stayed at the top of the charts for almost two months, making Eminem the rap star of the year. In 2001 Eminem received Grammys for Best Rap Solo Performance for "The Real Slim Shady", Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for "Forgot About Dre" (in collaboration with Dr. Dre in Dr. Dre's album), and the Best Rap Album of the Year Award. While promoting his group, D12, Eminem also won the 2001 Brit Awards for the Best Male Artist. Not satisfied with just rap, Eminem starred in the movie 8 Mile. His hard work earned praise and the movie soundtrack "Lose Yourself" which would earn him numerous awards including Grammys for Best Male Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Song and an Oscar for Best Music, Original Song. Eminem's show in 2002 produced many hits such as "Without Me" and "Cleaning Out My Closet" and brought him two more Grammys, one for Best Short Form Music Video for "Without Me" and Best Rap Album. Eminem again was seen on the charts in 2004 with the first single of his fourth album, Encore. Furthermore, he invited great controversy with his video "Just Lose It" which makes fun of musician Michael Jackson. "When you get fame and fortune and you make something of your life and become successful. But there is a whole new slew of problems that I never expected that come along with it."
